Set against the sun-drenched cliffs of the English coast during World War II, Summerland (2020) is a sweeping and heartfelt drama about love, loss, and second chances.
Fiercely independent and reclusive writer Alice (Gemma Arterton) lives a solitary life investigating folklore and myths, deliberately isolating herself from the local village. Her quiet world is entirely upended when she is forced to take in Frank, a young boy evacuated from the London Blitz. Though Alice initially resists the arrangement and bristles at his presence, Frank’s innocent curiosity and shared fascination with the mythological “Summerland”—a pagan concept of an afterlife where souls find peace—gradually begins to thaw her guarded heart. As their unexpected bond deepens, Frank’s presence unlocks Alice’s deeply buried memories of a forbidden past romance, forcing her to confront the ghosts of her past and open herself up to the possibility of healing.
